FNMI Students & Their TIS Project

by User Not Found | Dec 03, 2015

Over the past two days, twelve of our students have participated in the second phase of the TIS (Trauma Informed Schools) project.  This part involved students participating in a FNMI (First Nations Metis and Inuit) perspectives workshop and in creating a youth directed tool kit to address how schools and communities can play stronger roles in creating safe and accepting environments for Indigenous students and families.

Our students identified 3 messages that they wished to address:
• Inform/ Understand the trauma
• "What's up" / I exist   (accept that I'm here)
• Include our culture (it matters)

They addressed these messages in the following ways:

Inform/ Understand the trauma:
Some students created a series of memes, explaining Indigenous history. Others created a Prezi presentation. One student is in the process of writing and recording a song.

What's up/ I exist
Students created their own water colour representation.  Others created a slide show from a series of images drawn on a white board tablet.  One student created a meme - while another created an ad.

Include our culture
One student created a diorama of an outdoor medicine wheel garden; another created a diorama of an indoor classroom space.

Many thanks to all who helped make these two days successful!!
